The Seeker
This is a new online journal, run by PhD students of Glasgow University’s English Literature Dept. It features new fiction, prose and essays and is well worth a look at. I act as one of the Associate Editors of this journal.
Laurahird.com
This is a website run by one of Scotland’s best writers, Laura Hird. She quite selflessly devotes her own time to featuring and promoting work by new writers, but also looks at music, film and theatre. This is an excellent online resource for new writers, and a great read for anyone else.
Pulp.net
This is a monthly new fiction magazine, which features established names as well as new talent.
Glasgow University Creative Writing MPhil
This is where you can find information about the Masters course which I teach on. If you know anything at all about contemporary Scottish writing, you’ve probably heard of this. Convened by Willy Maley. Former professors include James Kelman and Alasdair Gray. Currently taught by the likes of Tom Leonard, Janice Galloway, Zoe Strachan and Laura Marney. Graduates include not only Marney and Strachan, but virtually the whole of the new generation of writers in Scotland: Anne Donovan, Louise Welsh, Nick Brooks, Rodge Glass, Will Napier, Colette Paul, Rachel Seiffert and Alison Miller.
Word Power
This a radical bookshop on West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, probably the best of its kind in Scotland. Unlike Amazon, it has not received a million pounds of Scottish Executive funding. It is a marvellous place, full of ideas and energy, and as much a force for promoting radical politics in Scotland as it is for promoting challenging new literature. They are also organisers of the Edinburgh Independent Radical Book Fair which is on every May.
